Ulcerative colitis is a chronic disease that causes inflammation and sores in the inner lining of the large intestine, which includes the colon and the rectum.
UC is one of the two main forms of chronic inflammatory disease of the gastrointestinal tract, called inflammatory bowel disease (IBD). The other form is called Crohn’s disease.
Certain types of foods may worsen diarrhea and gas symptoms, especially during times of active disease.
Diet suggestions include:
Start with an elimination diet to determine food sensitivities and stabilize acute situations.
Eat small amounts of food throughout the day.
Drink plenty of water (drink small amounts throughout the day). Avoid carbonated drinks.
Avoid high-fiber foods (bran, beans, nuts, seeds, and popcorn).
Avoid fatty, greasy or fried foods and sauces (butter, margarine, and heavy cream).
Avoid milk products if you are lactose intolerant.
Supplements:
Zinc picilinate 30mg/day
Folate
Omega 3 oils. Found in wild fish, algae, free range chicken eggs and flax seeds.
Phytosterils (moducare)
Glutathione, Cysteine- maintains cell membrane integrity
Glutamine 3-12gms
Arginine 3gms
Vit E 800iu
Quercetin
Vit C + selenium after acute attack.
